Stag hunting takes place on highland estates from late July until 20th October. The rut (mating) starts in September and as large groups of males congregate it is possible to choose the older or weaker animals to stalk.
Stalking relies on the ability of the stalker to get himself and you (the guest), into a firing position without alerting the chosen stag to your presence. The wind can change very quickly and eddies around hills and through glens, so patience is vital! This often means a long walk on strenuous terrain, through wet heather, along wild rivers and possibly a long crawl to get into range.
Stalking celebrates the challenge and the exercise more than the shot, and the unique and rugged landscape of Lochaber is rich in wildlife. The opportunity to see rare wildlife such as a golden eagle or the antlers of a stag appearing over the top of a rise is unforgettable.
