There is generally no problem parking, either in the towns or at the beginning of walks. Even during the busier season of July and August roads and parking places are quiet as soon as you venture off the beaten track.
There is plenty of municipal parking in the larger towns of Fort William, Mallaig and in Glencoe. In Fort William there is both long (£1.50/day).and short stay (40p/half hour, £1/hour) parking within easy reach of the town centre.
There is usually plenty of parking at the beginning of Forestry Commission marked walks, often along good quality forestry roads so there’s no need for a 4 x 4!
Parking at more remote places is often in lay-bys along the roadside.
On single-track roads make sure you leave your car in a lay-by, and not a passing place. There are also plenty of lay-bys on the main roads through Lochaber, often conveniently situated at scenic points so it’s easy to stop and admire the views.
Guide books and local information will usually tell you the best places to park for the start of outings.
If you’re heading up Ben Nevis you can park your car either at the Glen Nevis Visitor Centre in Glen Nevis or at Achintee, near the Ben Nevis Inn. Alternatively leave your car in town and take a bus up the glen.
